80-Year-Old Chicago Man Kills Armed Home Invader

Posted in 2nd Amendment on June 3rd, 2010

An 80-year-old Chicago man shot and killed an armed man who broke into his two-story house in a pre-dawn home invasion Wednesday on the city’s West Side.

At about 5:20 a.m., the homeowner and his wife, also in her 80s, discovered the intruder entering their home through a back door. The homeowner, who had a gun, confronted and killed the burglar on the doorstep, police said. Cops said the intruder also fired his gun during the struggle.

“It’s a good thing they had a gun, or they might be dead,” said Curtis Thompson, who lives next door to the couple, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Neighbors described the elderly couple, who both walk with canes, as pillars of the community in Garfield Park, where home invasions have been all too frequent.

. . . .

No charges have been filed against the homeowner, but Chicago currently has a statute outlawing the possession of handguns. Its legality is currently being decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

A high-profile Chicago attorney has already stepped forward offering to represent the man pro bono if he faces charges for possessing a weapon. (Read more from foxnews.com)

7 States seek dismissal of federal gun laws

Posted in 2nd Amendment, Rebellion of States on April 21st, 2010

Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff and six other states filed a brief in federal court in Montana on Monday, arguing that the federal government has no constitutional authority to regulate firearms manufactured and sold within their borders.

The friend-of-the-court brief seeks to bolster arguments made by the Montana Shooting Sports Association (MSSA) that legislation passed in that state exempts Montana-made guns from federal taxation, registration, licensing, marking or record-keeping requirements.

Utah adopted similar legislation last session. Tennessee, Arizona, Idaho, South Dakota and Wyoming have done so as well, asserting it as an exercise of their authority under the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

The brief asks that court to recognize that “the 10th Amendment is not an empty promise to the states, but a vital guarantor of rights retained by the states, including the right to regulate purely intrastate activities.”

Alabama, Idaho, South Carolina, South Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming joined in the Utah brief. (Read more from lewrockwell.com)

Three Cheers for the Swiss People

Posted in 2nd Amendment, Hidden History, Money/Economy/Taxes on January 10th, 2010

In this great article, Paul Green discusses how Switzerland remains resolutely free and prosperous.

Guns and the military are yet another example. Guns are everywhere – and crime is nowhere. In fact they have at least two of the most peaceful, crime-free cities in the world – according to various online authorities. Zurich even has a half-holiday in October for the “boy shooting” contest and American-style fair where young boys – and girls too – compete with assault rifles at targets.

Gun Wielding Grocer stops robbery, gets ‘thank you’ note from robber

Posted in 2nd Amendment on December 4th, 2009

Mohammad Sohail, the proprietor of a deli on Long Island, didn’t hesitate when he was accosted back in May by a man with a baseball bat who demanded his money. After having his hands up momentarily, the New York Post reports, Sohail pulled a 9 mm rifle from behind his counter and forced the would-be robber to drop his weapon.

After the robber pleaded for his life, saying he had no choice but to rob to feed his family, Sohail gave him some bread, $40, and sent him on his way.

The story would be astounding enough if it ended right there, but the robber surprised Sohail again just this last week, with a letter containing thanks and $50. (Read more from huffingtonpost.com)

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Oct. 22 (UPI) — A 70-year-old woman shot and killed a man suspected of attempting to rob her during her visit to Columbus, Ohio, police said.

Columbus Police Sgt. Eric Pilya said the unidentified woman, who was in Columbus for a horse show, fatally shot the suspect after he allegedly attempted to rob her and at least four other people at a local motel, The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch said Thursday.

Police said the woman responded to the man’s alleged demand for money Wednesday night by grabbing a gun that had been in the room and opening fire.

The robbery suspect was injured in the shooting and died after staggering out into the Continent Inn’s parking lot, police said. (Read more from upi.com)

Gun Town U.S.A. peaceful, prosperous, and murder free

Posted in 2nd Amendment, Big Media on August 27th, 2009

“In March 1982, 25 years ago, the small town of Kennesaw – responding to a handgun ban in Morton Grove, Ill. – unanimously passed an ordinance requiring each head of household to own and maintain a gun. Since then, despite dire predictions of ‘Wild West’ showdowns and increased violence and accidents, not a single resident has been involved in a fatal shooting – as a victim, attacker or defender.

The crime rate initially plummeted for several years after the passage of the ordinance, with the 2005 per capita crime rate actually significantly lower than it was in 1981, the year before passage of the law.

Prior to enactment of the law, Kennesaw had a population of just 5,242 but a crime rate significantly higher (4,332 per 100,000) than the national average (3,899 per 100,000). The latest statistics available – for the year 2005 – show the rate at 2,027 per 100,000. Meanwhile, the population has skyrocketed to 28,189.

By comparison, the population of Morton Grove, the first city in Illinois to adopt a gun ban for anyone other than police officers, has actually dropped slightly and stands at 22,202, according to 2005 statistics. More significantly, perhaps, the city’s crime rate increased by 15.7 percent immediately after the gun ban, even though the overall crime rate in Cook County rose only 3 percent. Today, by comparison, the township’s crime rate stands at 2,268 per 100,000.

This was not what some predicted.

In a column titled ‘Gun Town USA,’ Art Buchwald suggested Kennesaw would soon become a place where routine disagreements between neighbors would be settled in shootouts. The Washington Post mocked Kennesaw as ‘the brave little city … soon to be pistol-packing capital of the world.’” (Read more from wnd.com)

Montana signs defiant gun law

Posted in 2nd Amendment, Rebellion of States on May 15th, 2009

“The State of Montana has defied the federal government and their gun laws. This will prompt a showdown between the federal government and the State of Montana. The federal government fears citizens owning guns. They try to curtail what types of guns they can own. The gun control laws all have one common goal confiscation of privately owned firearms.

Montana has gone beyond drawing a line in the sand. They have challenged the Federal Government. The fed now either takes them on and risks them saying the federal agents have no right to violate their state gun laws and arrest the federal agents that try to enforce the federal firearms acts. This will be a world-class event to watch. Montana could go to voting for secession from the union, which is really throwing the gauntlet in Obamas face. If the federal government does nothing they lose face. Gotta love it.

Important Points If guns and ammunition are manufactured inside the State of Montana for sale and use inside that state then the federal firearms laws have no applicability since the federal government only has the power to control commerce across state lines. Montana has the law on their side. Since when did the USA start following their own laws especially the constitution of the USA, the very document that empowers the USA.” (Read more from dailypaul.com)

British Gun Policy

“The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed.” -Alexander Hamilton

“Both oligarch and tyrant mistrust the people, and therefore deprive them of arms.” -Aristotle

“The biggest hypocrites on gun control are those who live in upscale developments with armed security guards — and who want to keep other people from having guns to defend themselves. But what about lower-income people living in high-crime, inner city neighborhoods? Should such people be kept unarmed and helpless, so that limousine liberals can ‘make a statement’ by adding to the thousands of gun laws already on the books?” -Thomas Sowell

Mass. liquor store clerk kills robber

“Worcester police say a liquor store clerk fatally shot a man who was trying to rob the store. Sgt. Kerry Hazelhurst said the masked man was shot multiple times as he and an accomplice tried to hold up Big Bob’s Liquors about 10 p.m. Wednesday.

. . . .

Police said Rivera carried a .375-caliber handgun into the store. He had a criminal background, including a 15-year sentence for two counts of armed robbery in Florida. The worker and another store employee have not been charged with any crime.” (Read more from boston.com)

Washington Post Sports Columnist Advocates Abolishing 2nd Amendment

Posted in 2nd Amendment on December 4th, 2008

“Now, let’s not start screaming about the Second Amendment. To begin with, the amendment should be abolished — a sensible interpretation of the amendment is that it was written to allow the people to raise a militia for protection and to hunt for food. Clearly no one needs to raise a militia these days, and those who hunt for a living can be licensed to do so.” (Read more from WashingtonPost.com)

I have done a 180 on this issue from how I felt in my youth. Here’s how I feel now:

- Banning guns does not reduce crime. Crime goes UP when the law abiding citizen is disarmed.
- The Second amendment is not about hunting and it’s not about target shooting. It’s about giving the government good reason to leave the citizen alone.
- An armed man is a citizen. An unarmed man is a subject.
- A gun in the hand is better than a cop on the phone.
- Gun control is not about guns; it’s about control.
- Free men do not ask permission to bear arms.
- Those who trade liberty for security have neither.
- What part of “shall not be infringed” do you not understand?
- 64,999,987 firearms owners killed no one yesterday.
- Criminals love gun control; it makes their jobs safer.
- Only a government that is afraid of its citizens tries to control them.
- The American Revolution would never have happened with gun control.
