An American rights group is suing the police in Pennsylvania for issuing tickets, which carry a jail sentence, to people for swearing.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which filed the lawsuits earlier, argues that the right to use profanity is protected by the U.S. Constitution.

“Unfortunately, many police departments in the commonwealth do not seem to be getting the message that swearing is not a crime,” said Marieke Tuthill of the ACLU of Pennsylvania. “The courts have repeatedly found that profanity, unlike obscenity, is protected speech.” (Read more from news.yahoo.com)

Nine people were indicted Wednesday on federal charges of accessing President Barack Obama’s student loan records while they were employed for a Department of Education contractor in Iowa.

The U.S. attorney’s office said a grand jury returned the indictments in U.S. District Court in Davenport.

All nine are charged with exceeding authorized computer access. They are accused of gaining access to a computer at a Coralville office where they worked between July 2007 and March 2009, and accessing Mr. Obama’s student loan records while he was either a candidate for president, president-elect or president.

Why all the fuss?

• 7.3 million Americans were under the authority of the correctional system, more than in any other country.

There is no general crime of prostitution in Canada. However, many of the activities that are usually associated with prostitution are classified as criminal offences.

For starters, buying sex from or communicating about buying sex with someone under the age of eighteen years is an indictable criminal offence that carries with it a minimum six-month jail term.

While it is not a crime in general to arrange to buy sex or communicate for that purpose, if this is done or attempted in a public place (eg. on the streets) it is considered a criminal offence. This is classified as a summary conviction offence.

Engaging in sexual acts in a public place is also a criminal offence that falls under the ‘indecent act’ provisions of the Criminal Code. Even if you are engaging in sexual activity in the ‘privacy’ of your car, you could be charged with this offence.

Obviously, the activity of prostitution has to take place somewhere. Again, the exchange of sex for consideration is not criminal, per se. However, if the activity occurs in a place which is used regularly or habitually for the purposes of prostitution, then it is considered a “common bawdy-house”. The Criminal Code makes it an offence to run a common bawdy-house, to work in one, to allow one to be operated over a place or premise which you have control, or to be found in one without a lawful excuse. Did you know that just 16 large sea going cargo ships can produce as much pollution as all the world’s cars. Think about that! There are 100,000 of these ships on the sea! And none are restricted from burning dirty sulphur laden fuel oil that is not allowed as fuel by others. And that means they produce 6,250 times as much pollution as ALL the cars in the world!
