Protesting Gaza

Congressman Brian Baird Views Destruction in Gaza – Calls for Immediate Relief and Change in Policy
Two members of Congress, Brian Baird (D-WA-03), and Keith Ellison, (D-MN-05), visited Gaza on Thursday to view firsthand the destruction from recent Israeli air and ground attacks and to meet with international and local relief agencies. This visit, which did not have the official sanction of the Obama Administration, is the first time anyone from the U.S. government has entered Gaza in more than three years. . . .

‘The amount of physical destruction and the depth of human suffering here is staggering’ said Baird, ‘Entire neighborhoods have been destroyed, schools completely leveled, fundamental water, sewer, and electricity facilities hit and relief agencies heavily damaged. The personal stories of children being killed in their homes or schools, entire families wiped out, and relief workers prevented from evacuating the wounded are heart wrenching – what went on here, and what is continuing to go on, is shocking and troubling beyond words.’

Inquiring about the status of relief efforts, the Congressmen learned that some aid material has been allowed in since the intensity of the attacks lessened a month ago, but much is still being blocked by the Israeli defense forces. Examples of aid that has been banned by the Israeli Government include: lentils, macaroni, tomato paste, lentils and other food. Basic building materials, generator fuel and parts to repair damaged water treatment equipment have also been kept out. . . .” (Read more from www.house.gov)

Students angered by Gaza revive sit-ins
A new wave of student activism sparked by events in Gaza has seen dozens of university buildings occupied in Britain, with some of the UK’s top educational establishments agreeing to set up scholarships for Palestinians or disinvest in arms companies linked to Israel.

Though the assault on the territory ended three weeks ago, lingering anger over the attack has prompted students to stage sit-ins at 21 universities, many organised via blogs, Facebook and text messages.

Students at Glasgow and Manchester are refusing to leave the buildings until their demands are met, after similar occupations at other universities provided tangible results in what is being seen as a new era of highly organised student activism.” (Read more from guardian.co.uk)

Academic boycott of Israel spreads to US & Jerusalem universities
Hundreds of professors and scholars in the US have, for the first time, joined in an academic boycott of the state of Israel, in an effort to pressure Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian land, and disenfranchisement of the Palestinian people. In addition, Al-Quds University in Jerusalem, a Palestinian-run university, has joined the call for boycott.

The US boycott comes in the wake of dozens of similar boycotts launched in various parts of the world, including in England, Spain, Canada and Australia. The Canadian boycott began in Quebec when academics signed a letter stating:

‘We are a group of teachers and employees at Quebec colleges and universities who stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people, and with the people of Gaza who have suffered through the Israeli siege . . . .’” (Read more from imemc.org)

Firms defraud government but get new US contracts

Posted in Corruption on February 27th, 2009

“WASHINGTON – Companies that defrauded the United States and jeopardized American lives received new government work despite rulings designed to stop them from receiving federal contracts, government investigators report.

Payments went to a company whose president tried to sell nuclear bomb parts to North Korea, a company that jeopardized lives on the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy, and a seller of body armor that the Air Force said was defective.

The companies were on a government database of 70,000 individuals and businesses suspended or barred by various U.S. agencies from receiving government contract work.” (Read more from news.yahoo.com)

Pathetic and funny until you realize this is OUR money the government is wasting. We should all quit our productive jobs and work for the crooks. We’ll all live off the printing press, and taxes on the few suckers who don’t have government jobs.

Kyrgyz MPs vote to shut US base

Posted in Afghanistan, Russia on February 27th, 2009

“The decision was passed by 78 votes to one. Once President Kurmanbek Bakiyev signs the bill, the US has 180 days to leave the base. . . . Bishkek denies any link between the move to shut the base and Moscow’s aid. . . .

Thousands of US soldiers pass through the Manas base every month on their way in and out of Afghanistan. . . . It is also home to the large tanker aircraft that are used for in-air refuelling of fighter planes on combat missions, and it serves as a key supply hub. . . .

For Russia, on the other hand, its closure would be a diplomatic victory as it seeks to reassert its influence in former Soviet republics, analysts say. . . .

With supply lines to Afghanistan via Pakistan increasingly threatened by militant attacks, Washington has intensified talks with other countries in the region in the wake of Mr Bakiyev’s announcement. . . .

The US used to have an air base in Uzbekistan that served troops operating in Afghanistan. But Uzbek authorities closed it in 2005 after criticism from the US and EU over a crackdown on a mass protest in the town of Andijan.” (Read more from news.bbc.co.uk)

Israel takes control of more West Bank land

Posted in Israel/Palestine on February 27th, 2009

“JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel has taken control of a large chunk of land near a prominent West Bank settlement, paving the way for the possible construction of 2,500 settlement homes, officials said Monday, in a new challenge to Mideast peacemaking.

Successive Israeli governments have broken promises to the United States to halt settlement expansion, defined by Washington as an obstacle to peace.” (Read more from google.com)

Rahm, our knuckle-cracking, perk-receiving, tax-avoiding, fraud-committing Chief of Staff

Posted in Corruption on February 26th, 2009

Rahm Emanuel: ‘The Second Most Powerful Person In The Country’
Earlier this month, Barack Obama was meeting with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other lawmakers when Rahm Emanuel, his chief of staff, began nervously cracking a knuckle.

Mr. Obama then turned to complain to Mr. Emanuel about his noisy habit.

At which point, Mr. Emanuel held the offending knuckle up to Mr. Obama’s left ear and — like an annoying little brother — snapped off a few special cracks.” (Read more from huffingtonpost.com)

Rahm’s Rent Is Just The Tip Of The Ethics Iceberg
NYPost — NEWS broke last week that Rahm Emanuel, now White House chief of staff, lived rent- free for years in the home of Rep. Rosa De Lauro (D-Conn.) – and failed to disclose the gift, as congressional ethics rules mandate. But this is only the tip of Emanuel’s previously undislosed ethics problems. . . . Emanuel is a multimillionaire, but lived for the last five years for free in the tony Capitol Hill townhouse owned by De Lauro and her husband, Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg.

During that time, he also served as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee – which gave Greenberg huge polling contracts. It paid Greenberg’s firm $239,996 in 2006 and $317,775 in 2008. (Emanuel’s own campaign committee has also paid Greenberg more than $50,000 since 2004.) . . . Some experts suggest that it was also taxable income: Over five years, the free rent could easily add up to more than $100,000. . . .

Emanuel served on the Freddie Mac board of directors during the time that the government-backed lender lied about its earnings, a leading contributor to the current economic meltdown. The Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight Agency later singled out the Freddie Mac board as contributing to the fraud in 2000 and 2001 for “failing in its duty to follow up on matters brought to its attention.” In other words, board members ignored the red flags waving in their faces. . . . Emanuel was paid more than $260,000 for his Freddie “service.” Plus, after he resigned from the board to run for Congress in 2002, the troubled agency’s PAC gave his campaign $25,000 – its largest single gift to a House candidate.” (Read more from informationclearinghouse.info)

Jim Rogers: “Let the banks fail.” “Abolish the IMF and World Bank.”

Posted in Money/Economy/Taxes on February 26th, 2009

Jim Rogers is one of my heroes. The truth has a particular ring to it, not easily mimicked:

On the Obama ’stimulus’: “They’re making things worse. . . They’re taking the assets away from the competent people, and giving them to the incompetent people. . . It’s terrible economics, and it’s terrible morality, not that politicians care about morality.”

“abolish the World Bank and the IMF. . . they do little more than take care of themselves, their own pensions, their own perks, their own salaries, if you work for the World Bank or the IMF you have a great life, but they’ve not done much for the rest of the world.”

“[Treasury Secretary Timothy] Geithner has never known what he was doing . . . and pretty soon everybody is going to find out.”

“Let them go bankrupt.”

Peter Schiff: Obama’s speech reveals total lack of understanding of basic economics.

Setback for New Hampshire reassertion of sovereignty (7 yea, 11 nay)

Posted in Constitution, Rebellion of States on February 25th, 2009

New Hampshire was the first of eight states (now nine) to introduce state legislation opposing the federal government’s invasiveness beyond their constitutional duties.

Here, NH-Rep. Dan Itse, is interviewed on Alex Jones’s infowars. Rep Itse sponsored of HCR 6, the bold reassertion of New Hampshire’s sovereignty under our tenth amendment.

Unfortunately, after much supportive rhetoric, the bill was voted down.

The Growing Army of Angry Men

“By Mark R. Crovelli

February 10, 2009 ‘Lew Rockwell’ — – One of the hardest things to deal with in the current economic depression is the disgusting hypocrisy of the U.S. congress, the new president, and the members of the Federal Reserve System. It is one thing to be told, as we all are, that we must hand over fat wads of our hard-earned money to these warmongering and thieving snakes or face jail terms, but one feels a whole new level of revulsion when these people make statements to the effect that they, and they alone, are in a position to ’save the economy’ by ‘creating jobs.’ . . .

On its face, the idea that politicians, bureaucrats, and bankers could ’save’ the economy is laughable. These are people, after all, who live exclusively at our expense. That is, these are people whose entire livelihoods are dependent upon taking money away from productive people and spending it on themselves and their favorite wasteful projects.” (Read more from informationclearinghouse.info)

Sound Money at the State Level

From goldseek.com:

Here is a list of 6 states (4 in the last month) and (2 states today) that have pending legislation to authorize the use of gold and silver to settle debts with its citizens and to provide them the legal means to avoid the devaluing of the dollar by having a parallel currency in light of massive bailouts and to protect them in the event of the dollars failure.

New Hampshire (The “Live Free or Die” state began in 2003)

Indiana Senate Bill 0453

Colorado House Bill 09-1206 (concerning a precious-metal-backed electronic currency)

Missouri House Bill No. 561 (provisions concerning gold and silver use by state and local government)

Texas went on alert for the first time in modern history, in reaction to violence just across the border between the Mexican military and the Mexican drug cartels.

TX Senator Dan Patrick:

“Mexico is on the verge of civil war.”

“Yesterday, the drug cartel used bazookas to take on police in Reynosa.”

“If the Federal government doesn’t protect the border, Texas will.”

US army ‘wants more immigrants’

Posted in Afghanistan, Immigration, Iraq on February 24th, 2009

“The United States army is to accept immigrants with temporary US visas, for the first time since the Vietnam war, according to the New York Times. Until now immigrants have had to have permanent residency – a ‘green card’ – in order to qualify for the services. . . .

‘The American army finds itself in a lot of different countries where cultural awareness is critical,’ said Lt-Gen Benjamin C Freakley, the top recruitment officer for the army. ‘There will be some very talented folks in this group,’ he told the New York Times. ‘The army will gain in its strength in human capital, and the immigrants will gain their citizenship and get on a ramp to the American dream.’ . . .

The programme will be limited to 1,000 enlistees in its first year, but if successful could be spread to other services and expanded. It could eventually provide the army with one in six of its recruits, the Times said. . . .

The Times said there appeared to be some opposition from officers and veterans, who expressed concern that some foreigners might have divided loyalties or be terrorists seeking to infiltrate the US armed services.” (Read more from news.bbc.co.uk)
